Animal Cruelty
Animal cruelty is a term that describes a wide range of behaviors and crimes directed against animals. There are many reasons and ways that individuals abuse animals, but animal cruelty is divided into two main types: active and passive.

Passive cruelty involves neglect of an animal, and often results in starvation, dehydration, infection, overexposure, and a lack of veterinary care.

Active cruelty refers to when individuals intentional harm animals with full knowledge of their actions. This behavior is often a sign of deeply set psychological disorders including sociopathy. Active cruelty can involve torture, maiming, and a disturbing range of abusive actions.

The Teen Connection

"Among the nationwide snapshot of cases The HSUS looked at, 20 percent of intentional cruelty incidents were committed by teens. Of that group, 95 percent were males. While prevention and intervention of animal cruelty is critical at all levels of society, reaching youth may be the best way to break a potentially escalating cycle of violence."

-The Humane Society of the United States, April 9, 2002

This statement exemplifies two critical reasons why this issue is particularly related to Woofin & Hoofin. Even though teenage boys make up about 7% of the population, they commit 20% of animal cruelty crimes. As an organization led by high school students, we are concerned over the prevalence of teenage participation in animal abuse cases. Woofin & Hoofin hopes that our 5K and Doggie Dash events can not only raise money to combat this issue, but increase education among the teenage population. By increasing awareness of animal cruelty, Woofin & Hoofin hopes to reach youth in particular and halt the start of cruelty to animals at an early age.

The Proceeds

Woofin & Hoofin donates 100% of our net proceeds to The Humane Society of the United States and DuPage County Animal Care and Control

The Humane Society of the United States is an organization that
seeks a humane and sustainable world for all animals—a world that will also benefit people. They are America's mainstream force against cruelty, exploitation and neglect, as well as the most trusted voice extolling the human-animal bond.

DuPage County Animal Care and Control is a self-supporting taxpayer department designed to:
  • Rescue animals that are lost, diseased, injured, or in peril
    • Enforce state and county animal control and welfare laws
    • Operate a shelter for stray and owner-relinquished non-native animals
    • Provide public educational programs for adults and children.
    • Promote responsible pet-ownership and animal welfare through counseling and law enforcement
